You have probably heard someone describe their son's room as "smelling like a hamster cage." And I have four sons. It has been an eye-opening and persuasive argument against acquiring actual hamsters.
The younger two are 4 and 6, and those are not the ages that contribute to the smell at our house; it is the 10.5-year-old and the 12.5-year-old, and it is only getting worse as they get older.
The weird thing to me is that I have to keep nagging them about taking showers and using deodorant. I'm imagining if someone pointed out to ME that the air in my general vicinity was reminding them of rodents kept in small enclosed spaces, and how few milliseconds would pass between that announcement and a new policy of showering twice-daily and spreading cakes of deodorant on a tarp so I could roll around on them after each shower.
Perhaps it's puberty that flips the cleanliness switch, or perhaps it's the feedback their peers will soon start casually flipping their way. I'd like to protect them against that sort of feedback, so for right NOW, what I do is wait until they're buckled into the car and I'm going about 60 down the highway, and then I make them listen to me discuss whether they DID or DID NOT manage to address the SCENT issue that morning, and WHAT exactly defines "addressing." (What? I'M nicer about it than a middle-schooler.)
I use Degree® Women and Dove® deodorants myself (which is why I was motivated to take this review: so easy to write honest positive reviews about things I already like and use), and I've been buying Degree® for them. I like how it doesn't have the strong cologney scent of so many men's deodorants, which I'd prefer not to smell on an oily 12-year-old.
The clearance stickers aren't pretty (except for those of us whose hearts leap at the sight of that shade of orange), and they're non-ideal for showing off the sponsor's name. But you'll notice they cover up the "Women" so the boys don't notice, which is why I can't remove them. So I put Paul's Degree® Men deodorant in the picture, too, for brand-showing purposes. (Also, please note that one of these deodorants HAS NOT EVEN BEEN OPENED. Sigh.)Part of the point of this post is to direct you to Don't Fret The Sweat's Facebook page. Unilever (they're the ones who make Degree®, Dove®, and Suave®, so they're the sponsors of this post) is ON-BOARD with the idea of keeping tweens non-sweaty/non-smelly even in stressy/sweaty situations such as middle school, so they gathered their own assortment of experts and advice and tips. Parents can add their own ideas for helping children transition from smelly little savages into fresh and sweet-smelling little savages.
I clicked through to make sure I wasn't directing you to anything I wouldn't feel comfortable directing you to---and I found some stuff that I'm going to use with my

Strangely enough, my mom doesn't really sweat (I sometimes am SURE I got ALL her sweat glands!) so she doesn't really have to wear deodorant at all. I have two boys, though, and one already gets a bit smelly sometimes so I'm thinking that the deodorant will start early for him!
My son is ten and recently started NEEDING to wear deodorant. It's especially gag worthy if he forgets and then goes to soccer practice. Blech.
I also got him some Clearasil face pads to scrub his face with at night since he's good with routine and those are easy. He was starting to get a little oily and I'd like to prevent acne as best I can for him.
I think I was 10 or 11 when my mom got me some deodorant. I never had a problem using it, I think you are right about the difference between teen girls and boys. Love the clever use of the clearance stickers. LOL. :D
I have no earthly clue as to when I started to use deoderant. Must've been around 10 or 11?
I think I convinced my mom at about 10 or so. I was a sports nut, and to me sweat=stink, even if that sweaty child was 5. My mom would not oblige before that age. With my kids who are sports nuts as well, I think I bought the first deodorant at about 9, but it meant nothing to them (much to my disappointment) until around a year later. Sigh.
don't remember when I started, but maybe 9 or 10? Also I wish my mom would have let me shave long before that!
I don't remember an exact age... I just know I had to be pretty young, maybe 8 or so, because puberty got the jump on me when I was in 2nd grade. I have a 9-almost-10 year old boy who hasn't yet, so far as I've noticed, begun to waft unpleasant odors about, but I'm sure that day is quickly approaching.
I was 11 and I had to MAKE my mom buy me some, because I needed it and she insisted I didn't. I still remember how nervous I was about asking and how horrified I was about the whole thing. ha - pre-teen drama.
I think I was 11 when I started using deodorant.

Pretty sure I was about 11, I think my son was a bit younger... maybe 10?
You're smart to avoid the cologne smelling stuff! And once they're older, avoid AXE like the plague! That stuff does NOT work! My son is now 15 and I finally convinced him to let me get him something else. Old Spice works great and since the Old Spice Guy is so cool, it's suddenly okay to use Old Spice! So, while it's still a bit cologn-ey... it actually does the job!
~~ AND it's not too weird smelling when my 6-yr old convinces his older brother to share! *shudder*
I don't know how to link directly to a tweet, but here's my profile, where I twitted.

I really have no idea when I started using deodorant and my kids are too little (4 and 6). I do, however, fear the day my sweet little boy starts to smell like . . . well, a not-so-sweet BIG boy! Hopefully, it will be ok because he already likes to use his dad's "manly" products - body wash (he calls it "ManlyMan Soap" HA!), hair stuff and cologne.
I made my son start at 8 because he was smelling of rancid chicken soup. I still have to nag about it...
I think I was about 11 or 12 when I started using deodorant
I think I was 12, too. Right around the end of elementary school/beginning of middle school.
Oh dear lord, my son is TWO and is currently insisting on wearing deodorant because he sees his parents putting it on every morning. (He wants to floss/brush for the same reasons, so we are not going to stealth-groom away from his vigilant eye.)
I don't really need an FAQ to tell me that he is really too young for deodorant. Happily, we have a hippy deodorant that was originally purchased during pregnancy for its all natural and totally inoffensive ingredients that was quickly abandoned due to its total lack of efficacy. We let our toddler roll this completely full deodorant around on his chest a little bit, and he rarely succeeds in even getting any out. It's so ineffective that I haven't ever even noticed him smelling like calendula... and I'm delighted to have found a use for the deodorant that I'd chalked up to a total waste of money.
I think I was 11. And Degree is what I've been using for years because it's the only brand that consistently works for me.

i must have been 11 or 12. i wore gabriela sabatini's (remember her?) scent, i used to ask for it as a bday and xmas present from an aunt. i thought it was so sophisticated! now i use a hippie deodorant.
We got a free sample in 4th grade when they did the whole first-run "your changing body" talk. There was Secret for the girls and Degree for the boys, but I got the wrong sample, so I bought Degree for men for years because whenever I tried switching to a female scent it was just too weird to smell it on myself. But I didn't start wearing it for real until I was 12, 8th grade. I remember being mortified that I didn't have any like the other girls when we took a 10-day class trip to the East Coast.
Hmm, I think I was in 6th or 7th grade? I have two boys (babies still) so I know this will be in my future before I know it!
I was around 10 or 11 (around the time I reached puberty). I have a feeling boys just need it a little earlier than girls.
Not to scare you, but my brother really didn't "take ownership" of his personal hygiene until late high school. So. gross.
Gosh, I really don't remember that far back for myself or for my daughter. She is 23 now!! I do remember hav ing to get on to her though to use it. chefl@swbell.net
I think I started using deodorant before I actually HIT puberty. My mom encouraged me when I was still in elementary school.
I was a smelly athlete so I definitely needed to start sooner rather than later. It took forever to find a deo that wasn't too strong but had staying powder. Dove was that deo for me. I also used Certain Dri as a means to shrink my pores and keep me from excessively sweating.
I don't exactly remember - 12 maybe?
As for boys, my husband admitted the other day that without puberty and the interest in girls/women on boys and men after that, men would probably seldom bath or wear deoderant and basically just wallow in stinkiness. So, there's one good thing about puberty??
I was 12 as well.
I was 12, and I used Teen Spirit. It smelled like chewable vitamins! Months later, I discovered Nirvana and got a huge kick out of the "Smells Like Teen Spirit" song, because, hey! I used that! I am a dork.
Now I exclusively use non-scented deodorants (Dove sensitive skin, specifically) because if my deodorant were to fail, I'd rather it fail and just smell like armpits than have it fail and smell like armpits in a field of rotting lavender. Gross.
i was about 12 when i started
karinaroselee at gmail dot com
I started using it in 5th grade - so that's what - 11 or so? Like a previous poster said, I wish my mom had let me start shaving then, too. 5th grade girls can be cruel.
I was around 12 when I started. I am a deoderant fiend though... I have to smell them all and use several different ones each week!
I'm pretty sure that I started wearing deodorant at a normal age, BUT something crazy has changed in the last 5 years or so and I've had to change over to clinical strength to help me out!
I think I was about 11. But, yes, NEAR-EXCESSIVE grooming, deodorizing, product-experimenting, hair washing, etc.
I remember I was in middle school, so I think 11? I also hit puberty at 10 though, so it became rather a needful thing.

Twin boys are entering high school and have just really began to need reminding. I try and leave deodorant out in plain sight so they can take the hint.
I was 12 (8th grade)...not sure I "needed" it yet but my friends and fellow cheerleaders were wearing it. Peer pressure to have fresh pits! LOL ;)
I'm definitely dreading it- the stink and the rest of the teenage stuff! :)
I think I was 10 when I started using deoderant and my daughter was 10 too. Sometimes I have to remind her to put it on in the morning

I think I started wearing deodorant at my early teens. I was always sweaty and no kidding, it wasn’t fun to be able to smell my own sweat, not to mention my close friends. It was one of my best friends who told me "it's time"! I better don’t go too much into details here! LOL

I don’t remember the exact age for myself or my son! But, boys seem to need it once they hit puberty!

I'm pretty sure I was 12. You're right, 9 or 10 DOES seem early to start noticing an... AROMA.
I don't remember how old I was when I started using deodorant. But my daughter is 9, and I recently bought her some. She doesn't need it yet, but I figured she could start before she gets stinky :)
I took her to Walgreens and made a big deal of it, she got to smell all the different scents and pick out the one she liked. She was so excited about it!

I can't remember exactly--11 maybe? But I do remember how old I was when I developed an allergy (I guess) and had to stop using it for a while (age 26). Yuck.
I don't remember, but I DO remember getting prescription strength anti-perspirant at one point. I don't really think I needed it, and it itched like CRAZY right after application so the last time I used it was on my wedding day.
My oldest is 10 and does not seem to need deodorant yet under his arms anyway. His feet are another story. I am working on convincing him not to wear his socks longer than one day.
I was probably around thirteen and it was when I started running cross country and noticed everyone else using deodorant ... probably just used it to fit in, in reality.
I was 12 when I started using deodorant. Teen Spirit was my brand back then. :-) My kids are too young yet, but my friend's daughter needed to start using it at age 8.
Late in grammar school, I think for me, and no kids so no input on them. I used to use Degree, then tried Dove and have been loyal to it for many years.
I think I was 12. Aerosol Sure for me! My daughter is only 6 so she doesn't use deodorant yet.
I was in middle school, so maybe eleven or twelve? My boys are too young for it now, but someday...
I currently LOVE Dove deoderant- original scent. I think I was around 11 when I started wearing deoderant (Ladies Speed Stick back then). I will make the kids start wearing it when they start to be smell like teenaged angst- LOL.
I was 11 when I first started using deodorant, you see, we started "Health" class in 5th grade (boys and girls separate of course) and there was little package of necessaries for the girls that included a trial size Secret deodorant. Everyone went in the bathroom and gathered round the sweet scent of baby powder :) My kids are 3 and 18 months, so though occasionally stinky, it's not the kind you can defuse w/ deodorant.
I'm leaving a comment because I want a gift card, though I flat out refuse to use Unilever because they test on animals and I find that inexcusable. (Dove also had an insanely racist ad not long ago). But I DO need a hundred bucks! ;) I was...hmm. 12, probably, when I started using Tom's of Maine!
I was...in sixth grade? Maybe? Or thereabouts? And I'm sure it came at the firm insistence of my mother, along with the high-time instruction to stop wearing worn old white cotton t-shirts that were quite so see-through.
My son, though. My SON. I was shocked to lean over him when he was nine and smell that distinct adult smell. Luckily it was (and mostly is) confined to the immediate vicinity of his body--nevertheless, when a sleepaway camp listed deodorant as one of the required supplies, I did not put up any fuss at all. And he seems to use it, although mostly right before bed, which seems to be kind of missing the point.
I'm pretty sure I was 11. I convinced my mom I needed some for some overnight camp thing that my 5th grade class was doing. I don't think I actually started needing deodorant until I was like 15, but I used it anyway.
Fourth grade for me, I believe, and I don't remember thinking much of it. I have no idea yet for my kiddo, so it's good she's just two. :)
Must have been somewhere between 10 and 12 for me. I do clearly remember that my mom developed a habit of asking me if I'd brushed my teeth and put on deodorant. I wanted to die of shame when it occurred to her to ask me that in front of her friend and her friend's son who was a year older than me and the cutest boy on planet earth. On certain days of my boys' toddlerhood, I actively plot to use this line in front of their friends some day.
I also don't remember when I started using deodorant. But I CLEARLY remember getting my first (of many, many, many ohmygod never-ending) zits in 8th grade. So it must've been right around there. And I used Teen Spirit...I remember this because I would STILL be using it if I could find it. Because I like smelling like watermelon, I guess.
So far, at 5 and 2, my kids would only benefit from something to freshen up their stinky, stinky feet. I fear for what the rest will smell like at this rate.
I must have started wearing deodorant when I was about 13. That was a long time ago, but I am pretty sure I started in 8th grade. Probably could have used it earlier!
I'm going to guess I was around 12 or 13. I don't remember specifically, but I remember realizing one day that I flat out smelled and begging my mom for some deodorant. She insisted it be *only* deodorant, not anti-perspirant, as she wanted to me as chemical-free for as long as possible.
My son is only 4, but I have already been warned of the boy-stink, so I know I have that to look forward to.
I was 12 too, I think. I mean, I know I was twelve once, and I think that's the age I started wearing deodorant. Gah, I'm such a grammar stickler and smart-ass. A horrible combination!
Is it weird that I have such a clear memory of the deodorant itself, yet I'm fuzzier on my age?
I'm thinking I was preteen. Like 11 or 12. My son is 4 so he has a little ways to go. :)
I can't remember exactly when I started but I'm sure it was close to when we've strongly encouraged my daughter to start (age 9). After all her practices and gym classes her clothes started voluntarily crawling to the laundry room!
At my kids' elementary school, the school nurse gives a presentation about body odor to the 5th graders at the beginning of the year. Both of my sons came home and demanded that I buy some antiperspirant "not just deodorant" for them. I would love to know just what she says in that presentation!
6th grade - when my PE teacher told us we smelled bad and to start wearing deoderent.
My kids each got the same talk - in PE, in 6th grade...

I think I was about 11 or 12 when I started, and my older son and daughter started about then. My youngest was really sweaty when school started this past August though, I am considering starting it for him earlier. Thank goodness for the cooler weather!
I think it was in 5th grade that I noticed other girls using deodarant, and I had to have some too! I lived with my dad, so I felt weird asking him to buy it for me, so I went to the grocery store and nervously bought my own.
oh email--
vsteck at gmail dot com.
I honestly have no idea how old I was. I do remember nothing being enough to keep my armpits from smelling in high school. I'm sure I needed prescription antiperspirant, but I had no interest in going to the doctor for it.
Jesabes(dot)blog(at)gmail(dot)com
I am not sure of my age when I started using deodorant, but I'd guess 12-13. I was very resistant to teenager-type-stuff, not sure why. I HATED bras and refused for a while. And then suddenly for gym class in middle school (OMG locker rooms and changing IN FRONT OF EVERYONE), I realized I was the only one NOT wearing one, and it was mortifying and that whipped my ass into gear. Sometimes I'd still forget to put one on, and oh, the shame.
I do delightfully remember that I wore Teen Spirit and the scents were really fun! Do they still make that stuff?! If not, they totally should. We will be shopping for it in 4-5 years
I used it when I was 11 years old. My 9 and 7 year olds need and use deodorant...not sure why they are younger than I was. They love the Degree for girls and love the scents. The deodorants work well for adults too. Degree is really our family favorite.

I was 12, and my kids tend to start needing it around then, also.
My mom bought me deodorant the summer before 6th grade. I was oblivious, but excited to use it. I remember telling all my friends.
I remember reading on papernapkin how she started buying milk w/o hormones and her kids stopped stinking. But her kids were younger at the time, like early elementary. Anyway, I thought that was fascinating (and disturbing).
Thanks for the contest.
My son is 6 but a big sweat ball so I know it will be soon. I was 12ish and fought my mom all the way (and I'm a girl). I hated to take showers but now hate feeling yucky and shower all the time. I also use degree.

I made my son start wearing deodorant when he turned eight last year. I volunteered for a class field trip and oh wow did most of those boys smell bad! I took pity on his teacher and gave her one less stinky kid. I was worried about the aluminum too, so I made sure it was deodorant only and not antiperspirant.
I think I was 9 - I remember I got a gift set for Christmas of Babe perfume & deodorant. I felt all grown up, but do you remember Babe? Definitely NOT good-smelling, high end perfume!

I was 11 when I started wearing deodorant, and I cherished my Teen Spirit Romantic Rose. I can still remember the smell if I think hard enough.
Both my son and my daughter were in middle school, say 6th grade, when they were coerced into wearing deodorant full time, and without excuse! My son (age 12) still needs the occasional reminder, especially when I find I'm rolling down the windows when he gets in the car after school. Whew.
I had my daughter, age 8, start wearing Dove deodorant this year. My son is only 6 and is jealous! I guess it wouldn't hurt to let him start wearing it now even though I don't think he needs it yet. At least he would be in the habit by that time.

I was the one to notice that I needed it at around 12 or 13. I had to ask my mother to get some for me. When my son was around 11, I bought some for him and told him how to use it.

I can't remember exactly how old I was when I started wearing deodorant, but I think between 11 and 13. Thanks for the opportunity!

I was 7. I was so smelly.
I was 12 when the marketing for Teen Spirit (California Breeze? or something like that?) called to me from the pages of Sassy (R.I.P)
I started wearing deodorant way back in the beginnings of time.. Or at least 50 years ago.
Thanks for the contest.

I think I was 11 or 12 when I started wearing it. I don't really remember it specifically though. Guess it wasn't that big of a deal.

I started using deodorant in the 5th grade, which is when I hit puberty! I just started using my mom’s and did so until I left home! I don't have any kids of my own.

Trying to get my teenager who is special needs to understand the importance of deodorant is difficult.
I remember being about 9 years old. It was 4th grade I think. We had just come in from recess, all hot and sweaty. Our teacher actually sat in front of the class and gave a lecture on the fact that we hadn't learned proper hygiene (apparently the classroom stunk!), and how we needed to go home and talk to our parents about deodorant. hahaha I didn't think it was very funny at the time, but it gave us a quick heads up, without having to single anyone out and embarrass them. I went right home and got some deodorant from my mom! rofl

I don't think I started until I was in high school. I don't even really remember it until college. My son received his 1st deodorant at an assembly at school in 4th grade. I guess the school thought the kids were getting stinky.

Don't remember for sure, but I believe I was around 10 years old.

I truly love this giveaway of all b/c I'm trying very desperately to promote to my nearly 13 year old son...to use deodorant and keep up good hygiene skills! He prefers to use Dad's deodorant...rather than his own!LOL! Thanks for the chance! I shred on FB and tweeted! (http://swistlereviews.blogspot.com/2011/10/dont-fret-sweat-and-100-visa-gift-card.html)
Def early teens. One day my mom just came over and said try this. The rest is history!
I must have been 10 or 11. I remember my mom saying I could probably wear a shirt again that I hadnt been wearing very long but then she sniffed it and um...deodorant was needed.
My mom suggested it when I was 9, and I was INSULTED. I really just hated anything that meant I was Growing Up. I was also less than pleased at needing a bra. There was MUCH drama. My older daughter is just like me, so I need to start brainstorming NOW (she's 5) how to get her excited about these changes some day. (Although she's great about horrifying her father when we're out shopping and pass the bras section in Target or wherever. "Oooh, that red one is neat! I want a red one when I grow up!")
I don't remember how old I was, but one son was 11 and I'm about to bring it up with the 9 year old...
I was 10 when I started wearing deodorant. I liked the scent so I was excited to try it.

I learned about deodorants in our junior high PE class. My mom never sweated very much and I don't either so it has not been much of an issue.

I was 11 and in 5th grade, I remember my mom using something called BAN, maybe if my memory serves me correct. My two older boys starting using deodorant in about 3 rd grade and they really stunk, they have been using it ever since

I know for sure I wore it in middle school, because I had just moved to Florida from Newport, RI and I was not used to the heat and humidity and I used to be embarrassed because I sweat so much. I used to wear jackets in the heat to cover the sweat stains.

I was eleven and I always liked to smell nice so it wasn't a big deal to me.
I was twelve when I first realized thatI would need deodorant after gym class.
I'm sure I was about 13 when I started using deoderant. A bit after the middle school assembly the girls get about it. ;)
